Palace shaken by ‘Hello Garci’ revival, says Lacson

MANILA, Philippines -- Senator Panfilo Lacson, who revived the ‘Hello Garci’ controversy in his privileged speech on Tuesday, rejected Malacañang’s call to drop the issue for its priority bills.“The Palace is obviously shaken by the Hello Garci revival, more so with new and damning evidence,” he said in a text message replying to an INQUIRER.net.

“What they don’t realize is that the all-important interests of the highest order like the rights of suffrage and privacy will be safeguarded as a consequence of the closure to this pestering issue that a forthcoming Senate investigation could bring about,” he said.On the other hand, Senate Majority Leader Francis Pangilinan, who also chairs the Senate committee on rules, and Senator Pia Cayetano agree that the issue be heard by the Senate Committee of the Whole.

“My personal position is that the matter of jurisdiction -- that is, can the Committee of the Whole investigate the issue considering certain prohibitions under the Anti-Wiretapping Law should be referred to the Committee of the Whole to decide on. The rules provide for this: Section 3 of the Rules Governing Inquires in Aid of Legislation. Hence my view is that the Rules Committee should refer the matter to the Committee of the Whole for disposition consistent with our own rules,” Pangilinan said.

Cayetano, for her part, said the controversy involving the recorded phone conversations between President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and former elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano is a “serious, constitutional” issue.

She said she was concerned less about the contents of the recordings than about “the constitutionality of the whole event and the participation of law enforcement agencies in violation of the Constitution and the law.”

In a related development, Senator Manuel Roxas II said the “Hello Garci” hearings will not hamper the passage of vital measures, including his and Cayetano’s affordable medicines bill.

Cayetano agreed with Roxas and said the Senate can always go on “multi-tasking mode” as it has always done in the past.

Money is not enough

The past May 2007 Election proves a lot of things. Most celebrity did not win. Most administration Senators lossed. And it also prove that more campaign money is not equal to more votes. Example of this is the new Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV. He expend almost less than 1 million in the last election and also not able to personally campaign.

This only proves that Filipino are more intelligent now in choosing the right candidate. They did not look who is popular, who can give them money, and who is supported by the President.

I only hope that Trillanes will perform his job well even if there is a possibility that he will hold office in jail. That he will act for the good of the people and nation....

Pacman in Congress????

One of the hottest issues this coming May 2007 election is the decision of Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao to run as Congress on his district in General Santos City. Is he ready for this fight? I watched his interview in Magandang Umaga Bayan, local morning show. He was asked by the host Julius Babao, if Pacquiao will not have hard time being a Congressman since this will entail making laws and legislation. He said that it will not be hard for him since many Congressmen already know this kind of responsibility. He will just vote for a law if he likes it or not. Does it mean, he doesn't have any plan to make his own law for this people?

I just shake my head when I heard it. Can Pacquiao really represent his constituent in the Congress? Or this is the end of his career?

If you are a resident of Pacquiao’s district in General Santos City, I beg to you… Please vote wisely…

Richard Gomez for Senate

I watched "Palaban" a local current affairs show and the interview Richard Gomez, aspirant Senator. He asked by Winnie Monsod, host of the show, about his plans if he won as a Senator. The following are his answers: Program for the youth, Education, Toothbrush campaign and others that I forgot. The toothbrush campaign made me laughed. What he will do? Make a bill in Congress about toothbrush, The Toothbrush Act of the Philippines.

Richard still has a pending case on tax evasion. It is good if he resolve it first, before try to resolve the country's problem.
